FMS Must See: Black-Owned Restaurant Month
Tonight I had the pleasure of attending a Black Restaurant Month launch event for fellow blogger, Genese Jamilah of I Don't Do Clubs. I've been a fan of the site for some time now especially since she caters to people like myself who are over the club scene. I have the T-shirt, starred in the movie etc. OVER IT. So when I came across the blog, I knew that what she had going on was right up my alley. Over the summer she started compiling lists of Black owned restaurants in NYC and then other cities followed right behind and with that she came up with the bright idea of launching Black-Owned Restaurant Month in New York. This is one of those ideas that I wish I thought of myself because it is that dope. As she mentioned on the site, "Black Americans are just 13 percent of the U.S. population and will have a buying power of $1.4 trillion by 2019." We need to start investing in our communities as much as we invest in others.
Black restauranteurs are so much more than soul food and it's about time that everyone gets on board with the support. I've already been to many of the restaurants on the list so now I'll just have to check out some of the others and I hope that you will too.
